Schizostachyum pergracile (Munro) also known as Tinwa Bamboo or Cephalostachyum pergracile or C. pergracile is an evergreen densely growing bamboo. It can grow to a height of 7 - 30 m. Its culms have thin walls. Natural stands of C. pergracile need to be protected against fire and grazing. To stimulate the production of good culms, it is good to remove old culms and to thin congested clumps. C. pergracile can be propagated by seed, rhizome and culm cuttings, although culm cuttings do not perform well.
Habitat
C. pergracile occurs in semi-humid to semi-arid regions on a
range of soils, it is most common in well-drained loamy soils. It can grow in semi-shade (light woodland) or no shade areas. It does particularly well in moist soil.
Uses:
provides timber for light quality construction, mainly in buildings, thatching and walling. It is also used in making furniture, handicrafts, baskets and mats, and its culms can be used for cooking and as utensils for serving rice.
