Dendrocalamus membranaceus or commonly known as white Bamboo is a large evergreen tropical clumping bamboo originating from Southeast Asia. The plant can grow to a height of 10 - 15 m tall and 6 - 10 cm in diameter, with internodes 22 – 42 cm long. Younger plants are covered with fine velvety brown hairs.
Habitat
Suitable for: a moist laterite or black limestone soil, though it can tolerate arid and barren conditions
Uses:
Young shoots are edible but with a slightly bitter taste. The culms can be used for building purposes, furniture, bamboo board, agricultural implements, slat traps, matting, basketry, and handicrafts, and as props for fruit trees. They are also quite good for the production of paper pulp
Agroforestry Uses: The plant has a large root system that helps to prevent soil erosion.
