Dendrocalamus asper or commonly known as Giant Bamboo, Dragon Bamboo or Rough Bamboo is a very large, dense-clumping, evergreen tropical, clumping bamboo species native to Southeast Asia. Its culms can grow between 20 - 30 m tall with a diameter of up to 12 cm. its internodes are 20 - 45 cm long and has relatively thick walls. Young plants are covered with fine velvety brown hairs. lower nodes have a circle of aerial roots while the upper nodes develop branches. It can be grown from rhizomes, culm or branch cuttings.

Habitat
Dendrocalamus asper grows well in moist, well drained soil up to 1500 m altitude. It can also grow in semi-dry areas. It does not do well in the shade

Uses
Dendrocalamus asper has strong, straight, and large culms well suited for heavy construction. Its young shoots are consumed as a vegetable. Can also be used for making good quality furniture, musical instruments, juice containers, toothpicks and chopsticks, household utensils and handicrafts.
